Bu çalışmada EKT uygulamasında kullanılan propofol ve tiyopental adlı iki anestezik maddenin karşılaştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Propofol ve tiyopental dörder kez EKT uygulanan 15 hastada dönüşümlü olarak kullandı. Hastalara anestezi amacıyla propofol ya da tiyopental, kas gevşemesini sağlamak için süksinil kolin verildi. Bilateral EKT uygulamasından sonra nöbet süresi ölçüldü. Kardiyovasküler yan etkileri belirleyebilmek için kan basıncı ve kalp atım hızı, EKT uygulaması öncesi ve sonrasında, ayılma odasında monitör yardımıyla izlendi. Sonuç olarak propofol anestezisinde toplam nöbet süresinin daha kısa sürdüğü, kardiyovasküler yan etkilerin daha az olduğu saptandı.

The aim of this study was to compare propofol and thiopental as anaesthetic agents for ECT. Propofol and thiopental were used alternately in 15 patients on four ECT occasions. The patients were anaesthetised with either propofol or thiopental and succinylcholine was given for muscle relaxation. After giving a bilateral ECT, the duration of seizure was measured. Blood pressure and heart rate were monitored before and after the treatment and in the recovery room for cardiovascular side effects. The mean duration of seizures was shorter and the cardiovascular side effects were rarer with propofol than with thiopental anaesthesia.
