Cinsiyet biyolojik olarak tanımlanan cinse ait özellikleri ifade eder. Toplumsal cinsiyet ise kadın veya erkek olma haline yönelik toplumun veya kültürün yüklediği anlam ve beklentileri ifade eden bir kavramdır. Kadınlar eğitim, iş yaşamı, sosyoekonomik durum ve sosyal statü açısından dezavantajlı konumdadırlar. Bu durum, genel sağlığın yanısıra ruh sağlığına da olumsuz etkide bulunmaktadır. Kadınlarda depresyon, anksiyete bozuklukları ve travma sonrası ruhsal bozukluklar erkeklerden daha sık görülmektedir. Kadınların ruh sağlığını iyileştirmek için, sadece ruh sağlığı alanında tedavi edici hizmetlere odaklanılması yeterli değildir; kadının sosyal statüsünün iyileştirilmesi ve cinsler arası eşitliği sağlamak için adımlar atılması gerekmektedir.

Sex is defined as the biological features of male and female. Gender is defined as the socially constructed roles, activities and attributes that a given society or culture considers appropriate for men and women. Women are disadvantaged in education, work, socioeconomic and social status. This disadvantaged position renders women disadvantaged in general health as well as mental health. Depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic disorders are more prevalent in women than men. In order to improve the mental health status of women, focusing on treatment of the disorders is not sufficient; the necessary steps should be taken to improve social status and ensure gender equality in every society.
