Duygusal ihmal çocuğun sevgi, bağlılık, bakım ve sosyal destekten yoksun kalması ve duygusal istismar çocuğun duygusal ve kişilik gelişimini engelleyen bir etki ya da etkinin yokluğudur. Diğer istismar türlerine öncelik verilmesi duygusal istismar ve ihmalin hem tanısını hem tedavisini zorlaştırmaktadır. Oysa, duygusal istismar ve ihmal sıklıkla diğer tip ihmal ve istismarlarla birlikte görülmektedir ve duygusal istismar tüm istismar tiplerinin çekirdeğidir. Duygusal istismara maruz kalmış çocuklarda, fiziksel ve cinsel istismarın aksine fiziksel bulgular mevcut değildir ve duygusal istismar sonucunda oluşan hasar fiziksel istismar sonucunda oluşan hasar kadar yıkıcı olmasına rağmen bulguları daha gizlidir. Çocukları istismarından korumak için toplumsal destek şarttır ve ülkemizde bu konuda daha fazla farkındalık yaratılmalı, çalışmalara hız verilmelidir.
