Kemoterapi ile elde edilen başarılara rağmen, lösemi tanısı anne babalar tarafından hâlâ çocuğun ölüme mahkumiyeti olarak algılanmaktadır. Çocuk, aile ve tedavi ekibi arasındaki iletişim hastalıkla başa çıkma uğraşında en önemli etken olduğu için anne babaların bu tepkisinin anlaşılması gerekir. Bu anlayışa giden yol da kanser sözcüğünün tıbbi terminolojideki anlamıyla kansere yakalanan çocuk ve ailesinin söylemindeki anlamının arasındaki farklılığın gözönüne alınmasından geçmektedir. Bireyin söyleminde kanser ölümle eşanlamlı olduğundan ölüm düşüncesi konusundaki suskunluk genelde kanserli, özelde de lösemili çocuk ve ailesi düzeyinde egemen olmaktadır. Lösemili çocuk ve ailesi çevresinde oluşan ve yaşanan acıların söze dökülmesini engelleyen bu suskunluğu kırma görevi çocuk psikiyatrına düşmektedir.

The diagnosis of leukemia is still perceived as a death sentence by the parents despite the latest achievements in the chemotherapy. Because the communication amongst the child, the parents and medical team has been a considerable factor for the success of coping with the disease, it is tremendously important to conceive such reactions of the parents. Cancer as a medical illness perceived by the physicians and cancer as predicament experienced by the patient as well as parents should be seperately treated. The concept of death pervades the whole mind of leukemic patients and their parents as all other cancer patients, for the diagnosis of cancer points only to a fatal end. The child psychiatrist has a special function in breaking the vicious cycle of silence and bad experience which surrounds the leukemic patients and their parents.
