Bu çalışma, bilişsel yetiler, psikotik ve depresif semptonlarla serbest radikal aktivitesi arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmak için yapıldı. Bunun için, bir huzurevinde yaşayan kişilere Mental Durumu Değerlendirme Ölçeği, Hamilton Depresyon Değerlendirme Ölçeği, Kısa Psikiyatrik Değerlendirme Ölçeği testleri uygulandı. Kan süperoksit dismutaz (SOD) aktivitesi, Fe, Cu ve Zn düzeyleri ölçüldü. Ağır bilişsel bozukluğu olan grupta yaş, SOD ve Fe düzeyleri hafif bilişsel bozukluğu olan gruba göre anlamlı derecede yüksek, bilişsel yetileri değerlendirme ölçek puanı ise anlamlı derecede daha düşüktü. Ayrıca yaş ile bilişsel yeti puanları arasında negatif, yaş ile Fe düzeyleri pozitif, bilişsel yeti puanları ile depresif semptom puanları ve Fe düzeyleri arasında negatif; psikotik semptom puanları ile depresif semptom puanları arasında pozitif ve depresif semptom puanları ile SOD aktivitesi iki cins arasında farklı bulunmamışken bilişsel yeti, psikotik ve depresif semptom puanlarında anlamlı fark bulundu. Sonuç olarak, serbest radikallerin yaşla bilişsel yetilerin kaybı ve psikotik ve depresif semptomların oluşumunda önemli olabileceği kanısına varıldı.

In this study, we investigated the relationship between cognitive state, psychotic and depressive symptoms, and free radical activity. For this purpose, the Mini Mental State Examination, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale tests were given and blood superoxide dismutase activity, Fe, Cu and Zn levels were measured in individuals who live in the house of refuge. In the group with severe cognitive changes, age, SOD and Fe levels were found higher and minimental state examination score was lower as compared to the group with mild cognitive changes. There were negative correlations between cognitive status and age, Fe levels, and depresison scores. Fe levels correlated positively with age. Depression scores had a negative correlation with SOD levels. The SOD activity was not significantly different between sexes, but the scores of cognitive status, psychotic and depresisve symptoms were. It was considered that free radicals may be important in age related cognitive loss, and the development of psychotic and depressive symptoms.
