Türkiye'de psikanalize olan ilginin çok eskilere dayanmasına rağmen, psikanalitik düşünce ve uygulamasının aktarılmasına yönelik kurumsallaşma girişimleri ancak 1980'lerden sonra başlayabilmiştir. İstanbul Psikanaliz Derneği (İPD) 30 Ekim 2001'de kurulmuş; ilk önceleri çalışma grubu olarak psikanalitik formasyonu aktarma işlevini yüklenmiş, ardından 2012'de Uluslar arası psikanaliz Birliği'ne bağlı aday dernek statüsüne kavuşmuştur. Bu yıl Buenos Aires'de toplanacak olan Genel Kurul sırasında derneğin İPA Bileşeni Dernek olarak kabul edilmesi beklenmektedir. İstanbul psikanaliz Derneği'nin kurucularının tümü formasyonlarını Paris Psikanaliz Birliği (SPP) bünyesinde tamamlamış olup, formasyon modeli olarak da Fransız modelini seçmiştir. Derneğin şu anda 26'sı formasyonunu tamamlamış, 48'i aday olmak üzere 24 üyesi bulunmaktadır.

Despite a long lasting interest in psychoanalytic thinking in Turkey, the attempts to institutionalize psychoanalytic thinking and psractice, in the sense of transferring it to the next generations, began only recently, after the 1980's. Istanbul Psychoanalytic Association (IPD) was founded in October the 30th 2001 and worked in the beginning as a working group having the task of transferring psychoanalytic training and practice to professionals working in the field of mental health. It gained the status of "provisional society" belonging to International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). It is expected that the IPD would gain the final status of "component society" of the IPA during the the Genertal Assembly voting which will be held in July 2017 at Buenos Aires. The founders of the IPD are all of them trained at the Paris Psychoanalytic Society (SPP) and the association has adopted the French training model. The IPD has in total 74 members, 26 are analyst members having finished their psychoanalytic training and 48 are candidates.
