Aile, ruhsal gelişim sürecinin önemli bir parçasıdır. İnsan zihninin gelişimsel bağlamını ailenin etkileşim biçimleri, duygusal tonu ve görünmez kurallar sistemi oluşturur. Bu açıdan çocuk ve ergen psikiyatrisi alanı aynı zamanda aile psikiyatrisidir. Çocuk ve ergen psikiyatristlerinin, ruhsal bozuklukların tanı ve tedavi süreçlerinde aile ile çalışmaları gereklidir. Aile çocuklarda görülen psikopatolojilerin risk faktörleri arasında yer alabileceği gibi koruyucu faktörler arasında da yer alır. Çocuk ve ergen psikopatolojisi değerlendirilirken aile süreçlerini de içeren bir formülasyon yapılması, gereğinde ebeveyn eğitimi veya aile terapisi ile tedavinin desteklenmesi gerekir. Klinik çalışmalar çocuk ve ergen psikiyatrisinin konusu olan psikopatolojilerin pek çoğunda aile odaklı bir bakış açısı ile planlanması durumunda tedavide etkinliğin arttığını göstermektedir. Çocuk ve ergenlerde görülen yeme bozuklukları, yıkıcı davranış bozuklukları, madde kullanım bozuklukları, anksiyete bozuklukları ve depresyon gibi bozuklukların tedavisinde aile odaklı müdahalelerin ilk seçenekler arasında yer alması önerilmektedir.

Family is the most important concept related to child mental development. Family interactions, emotional tone and invisible system of rules form the developmental context of human mind. This view accepts the notion that child and adolescent psychiatry is in fact family psychiatry. Child and adolescent psychiatrists have to work with the family in the process of diagnosis and treatment of all child mental disorders. Family may be the risk factor for child psychopathology or it may act as a protective factor. Assessment of child psychopathology must include a formulation regarding the family processess and the treatment plan should cover parents be it for psychoeducation or family therapy exclusively. Clinical studies have shown that for most of child psychopathologies treatment efficacy is increased if a family focused treatment plan is made. Family focused interventions are the first line evidence based treatments when eating disorders, disruptive behavior disorders, substance abuse disorders, anxiety disorders and depression in children and adolescents are concerned.
