According to the literature, tinnitus is defined as the perceived sensation of sound in the absence of acoustic stimulation. Recently, it has become one of the most common health problems disturbing daily life of the affected individuals. Altough previous studies have focused on the peripheral features such as inner ear pathologies as the possible causes of tinnitus, now there isstrong evidence suggesting that tinnitus is related to the neuronal hyperexcitability in the auditory and non-auditory brain areas. Recent neuroscience research has shown that neuromodulation tools such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have promising effects in the treatment of tinnitus. Given that the mechanisms of these observed positive effects are still open to discussion, the definite treatment strategies for tinnitus is still not clear. Taken together, the aim of this article is to review the pathophysiology of tinnitus, possible pathways of recovery by the neuromodulation treatments and to summarize the results of the recent randomized-controlled studies using rTMS.
