Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amaçları şunlardır: (i) Trabzon’da 1995 yılında intihar girişimi insidansını bulmak, (ii) intihar girişimi ile ilişkili çeşitli sosyodemografik ve bazı klinik özellikleri saptamaktır.

Yöntem: Veriler, il sınırları içindeki tüm sağlık kuruluşları, Adli Tıp Kurumu, Cumhuriyet Savcılıkları ve Yerel Yönetimler ile kurulan işbirliği sonucu elde edilmiştir. Hazırladığımız İntihar Girişimi Formu, olguların kendileri, yakınları ve olaya müdahale eden görevlilerle görüşülerek ve olayla ilgili tutanaklar ve dosyalar incelenerek doldurulmuştur.

Bulgular. Trabzon’da 1995 yılı intihar girişimi insidansı yüzbinde 31.5 bulunmuştur. Saptanan intihar girişimi insidansı kadınlarda erkeklerden, 15-24 yaş grubunda diğer yaş gruplarından, işsizlerde bir işi olanlardan, evli olmayanlarda evlilerden daha yüksek bulunmuştur. İntihar girişimi amacıyla en fazla seçilen yöntemin kimyasal madde içme olduğu bulunmuştur. Olguların %97’sinin girişiminden önce stresör bir olay yaşadığı ve %25 nin daha önce de intihar girişiminde bulunduğu saptanmıştır.

Sonuç: İntihar önleme stratejilerinin başında intihar girişimlerinin azaltılması gerektiği düşünüldüğünde, intihar girişimi ile ilişkili değişkenlerin bilinmesinin ve giderilmesinin, intihar hızlarını azaltacağı beklenebilir.

Objective: The purposes of the study are: (i) to find the annual incidence of suicide attempts in Trabzon in 1995, and (ii) to investigate some sociodemographic and clinical features which are related to attempted suicide.

Method: The data were collected for the study in cooperation with all of health institutions in Trabzon, Forensic Medicine Center, Public Prosecutorships and Local Governments. “Attempted Suicide Form” which was prepared by us filled out by interviewers with attempters, their relatives, and medical staff, offical reports and forensic or medical files were also examined, and the relatives of the cases were visited.

Results: Suicide attempts incidence per 100.000 population was 31.5 in 1995, for Trabzon. When suicide attempts incidence is taken into account, the incidence was greater in females than males, in 15-24 age group than other age groups, in employed than non-employed, and in married than non-married. Taking an overdose of chemicals were the most frequent method chosen by the attempters. It was found that 97% of the subjects reported a distressing event preceding suicide attempts, 25 % of the cases had former suicide attempts.

Conclusion: When taking account of suicide prevention strategies, it is concluded that factors that may be related to suicide attempts should be determined in general population, and then, be eliminated. This approach may be helpful in reducing the incidence of suicide attempts in general population.
