Demans sendromlarının kliniğinde bilişsel bozulmanın yanında davranışsal ve psikolojik belirtiler (DPB) görülür. Bu belirtiler preklinik evreden başlayarak tüm demans süreci boyunca klinik tabloda baskın olarak yer alır ve hem hasta hem de bakımveren için ciddi yük oluştururlar. Davranışsal belirtilerin eşlik ettiği hastalarda bilişsel ve fonksiyonel yıkım daha hızlı olur, yaşam kalitesi düşer, mortalite ve morbidite artar. Bu hastalar, sıklıkla daha erken dönemde uzun süreli bakımevlerine yönlendirilirler. Tanımlanması, değerlendirilmesi ve tanı konulması zor belirtilerdir, ancak tanı, değerlendirme, etiyolojisi ve nörobiyolojisine dair çalışmalar yürütülmektedir. Bu belirtilerin tedavi edilmeleri, olumsuz sonuçlarının engellenmesi için önemlidir. Antidepresanlar, antipsikotik (AP) ilaçlar ve anti-demans ilaçlar başta olmak üzere farklı ilaç grupları tedavide denenmektedir, ancak henüz üzerinde görüş birliğine varılmış, onaylanmış, belirtiye özgü bir tedavisi yoktur.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms along with cognitive disorder are commonly seen in dementia syndromes. Beginning in the preclinical stages, these symptoms are commonly seen throughout the whole process of dementia and constitute a burden on both the patient and the caregiver. In the patients with behavioral symptoms cognitive and functional deteriotation accelerates, quality of life decreases, morbidity and mortality increases. These symptoms are also associated with the higher rates of referral to the long-term care services. Defining, evaluating and diagnosing the behavioral symptoms are difficult, but research on diagnosis, etiology and neurobiology is continuing. Treatment of these symptoms is important to prevent the negative consequences. Different drug classes including antidepressants, antipsychotics and anti-dementia agents are used in the treatment, but there is not an approved, symptom-specific therapy yet.
