Siklotimik bozukluk, hipomani ve depresyon dönemlerinin sık aralıklarla yer değiştirdiği, bipolar bozukluğun, kronik gidişli ve işlevselliği önemli derecede bozan bir alt tipidir. Çocukluk ve ergenlikte başlayan bipolar bozukluk ile ilişkili çalışmalar giderek artmakta ve bu çalışmaların çoğunluğu genellikle tip I bipolar bozukluk ve tip 2 bipolar bozukluk tanılarına odaklanmaktadır. Başka türlü adlandırılamayan bipolar bozukluk ve siklotimik bozukluk daha az anlaşılan alanlar olarak kalmış ve genellikle pek çok çalışmada tip I ve II bipolar bozukluk tanısı almayanlar geniş bir başka türlü adlandırılamayan bipolar bozukluk tanısı altında toplanmış ve bu tanı hemen her çalışmada farklı kriterlerle tanımlanmıştır.Pek çok çalışmada siklotimik bozukluk tanımlanmamış ve klinik olarak değerlendirilmemiştir.Siklotimik bozukluğun çalışmalarda yer almaması, bilimsel olarak göz ardı edilmesine ve fark edilmemesine ya da duygudurum bozuklukları dışında farklı bir tanı almasına neden olmaktadır. Ayrıca bu eşik altı belirtileri olan vakaların fark edilmemesi olguların bir kısmının tedavisiz kalması ya da yanlış tedavi edilmesi ile sonuçlanmaktadır. Bu nedenle siklotimik bozukluğun daha iyi anlaşılması, tedavi ve prognozu açısından önemlidir ve bu konuda yapılacak daha çok çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.

Cyclothymic disorder is a subtype of bipolar disorder that has a chronic course and disrupts the functioning severely, where periods of hypomania and depression interchange frequently through the course of the disorder. Studies that are on bipolar disorder where onset is in childhood or adolescence increase in number day by day and most of these studies focus on Bipolar Disorder- Type I and II, in general. Bipolar Disorder- none otherwise specified and cyclothymia have remained as fields left mainly understudied and most of the studies so far have added these conditions into the group identified as broad type Bipolar Disorder- none otherwise specified, including all subjects that were not diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder- I or II, while this diagnosis has also been defined with separate criteria in almost every different study. In most of the studies, cyclothymia was not defined and was not assessed clinically. Cyclothymia being left out in studies invloving mood disorders has caused the entity to be unnoticed scientifically or diagnosed with a clinical condition other than what has been specified under the category of mood disorders. Besides, the cases having subthreshold symptoms being left out might cause some cases being untreated or mistreated. For these reasons, to properly diagnose cyclothymia in children and adolescents would be crucial to better understand the disorder and also for treatment and prognosis, indicating a need for more studies within this field.
