Depresif bozukluk çocukluk ve ergenlik döneminde sıkça görülen bir ruhsal bozukluktur. Çeşitli kültürlerde bozukluğun görülme sıklığının çocuklarda yaklaşık %2, ergenlerde ise %4 ile %8 arasında olduğu bildirilmektedir. Gelişimi ile ilgili birçok hipotez bulunmakla birlikte bozukluğun nedenleri kesin olarak bilinmemektedir. Mevcut bilgiler ışığında depresyonun psikososyal faktörlerle biyolojik faktörlerin bir araya gelmesinin sonucu olarak ortaya çıkan karmaşık bir süreç sonrası oluştuğu söylenebilir. Bu yazımızda depresyonla ilişkilendirilen genetik faktörler, nörotransmitter hipotezleri ve görüntüleme bulguları gibi etiyolojik faktörlerin incelenmesinin yanı sıra bozukluğa yol açtığı bilinen psikososyal risk faktörleri de irdelenmiştir. Ayrıca depresyonu açıklamaya çalışan psikodinamik modeller ana hatları ile ele alınmıştır.

Depressive disorder is a common psychiatric disorder among children and adolescents. The prevalence of the disorder has been reported as 2% in childhood and 4-8% in adolescence in different cultures. Although there are many hypothesis which are trying to explain the etiology of the depression, the causes of the disorder is still unclear. But in the light of the current data it can be claimed that depression is a result of complex processes which is affected by both psychosocial and biological factors. In this paper we discussed the current etiological factors linked with depression such as, genetics, neurotransmitters, structural and functional changes in brain as well as psychosocial risk factors. We also mentioned about the psychodynamic models explaining the disorder briefly.
