Çocuk ve ergenlerde görülen psikotik bozuklukların tedavisinde antipsikotik ilaçlar birincil tedavi seçeneğidir. Bu grup içerisinde ise atipik antipsikotikler ilk tercihtir. Bir ilacın kullanılabilir olması için istenen etkiyi sağlamasının yanında olumsuz yan etkileri taşımaması da oldukça önemlidir. 1950?lerde ABD?de ilk kez klozapinin keşfi ile kullanılmaya başlanan atipik antipsikotik ilaçların, reseptör afinitesindeki ve etki mekanizmasındaki farklılıklar nedeniyle klasik antipsikotiklere göre birtakım üstünlükleri mevcuttur. Negatif belirtilerde düzelmeye ek olarak, düşük ekstrapiramidal yan etki olasılığı da bu ilaçların tercih edilmesinde rol oynamaktadır.

There should be two important specialities of a good drug, first it should have desired effects, second it shouldn?t have negative side effects. Atypical antipsychotic drugs were first explored in 1950?s in USA with their first drug clozapine, their receptor affinities and influences brought some advantages when compared to classical antipsychotics. They improve negative symptoms and they have less extrapyramidal side effects. These are some reasons why clinicans choose these drugs.
