Çeşitli bellek sistemleri, bilişsel psikolojinin en temel araştırma konuları arasında yer almaktadır. Bellek sistemlerine ilişkin sınıflamalar bilişsel-davranışsal araştırmalardan elde edilen bulgular üzerine temellendirimekle birlikte, bu alt birimlerin fizyolojik, nöroanatomik ve biyokimyasal yapı ve mekanizmaları da incelenmektedir. Bu nedenle bellek sistemleri, sadece bilişsel psikoloji açısından değil, aynı zamanda sinirbilimler açısından da önemli bir konu niteliğindedir. Dolayısıyla bellek sistemlerinin anlaşılabilmesi, disiplinlerarası yaklaşımı gerektirmektedir. Disiplinlerarası yaklaşım çerçevesinde ele alınan bellek sistemlerinden biri de çalışma belleğidir. Değişik yaklaşımlar üzerine temellenen bilimsel çalışmalardan elde edilen bilgi birikimi, çalışma belleğine olan ilgileri arttırmaktadır. Bu makalenin temel amacı, son zamanlarda çalışma belleğine ilişkin olarak elde edilen bilişsel-davranışsal, nöroanatomik ve biyokimyasala bulguları karşılaştırmalı olarak ele almaktır. Böylelikle çalışma belleği eklektik bir yaklaşım çerçevesinde incelenmeye çalışılmıştır.

Various types of memory systems are among the main subjeets of research for cognitive psychology. Although the classification of the subtypes of the memory systems are based on the data gathered form the cognitive-behavioral research, underlying physiological, neuroanatomical and biochemical structures, and mechanisms of those subtypes are also under investigation. Therefore, subtypes of memory systems become important topics not only for the cognitive psychology but also for the neurosciences. It is clear that an understanding of memory systems requires an interdisciplinary approach. One of the memory systems which is studied within such an approach is working memory. Having a growing accumulation of information gathered from scientific work based upon different approaches, working memory increasingly attracts the attention of scientific community interested in memory systems. The main purpose of this article is to have a comprehensive evaluation of the recent findings of cognitive-behavioral, nevroanatomical, and biochemical reseoarch on working memory. In this work, working memory is examined within the framework of an eclectic approach.
