Depresyonun gelişmesinde rol oynayan birçok risk ve koruma etkeni bulunmaktadır. Kalıtsal yatkınlık, kadın olmak, bağımlı ve obsesif özellikler gibi bazı kişilik özelliklerine sahip olmak, güvenli olmayan bağlanma biçimi, stresli yaşam olayları, süregen psikiyatrik ve bedensel hastalık, toplumsal destek azlığı depresyonun başlaması ve olumsuz bir sürece yönelmesiyle ilişkilidir. Diğer taraftan, zeki olmak, güvenli bağlanma biçimi, yüksek engellenme eşiği, yüksek benlik saygısı, toplumsal bir ağa sahip olmak, sorun yönelimli başa çıkma yöntemi ise koruyucu etken olarak stresli yaşam olaylarının etkisini tamponlar ya da engeller. Tek bir risk etkeni depresyon oluşumu için yeterli değildir. Risk ve koruma etkenlerinin toplamı olumsuz yönde ise depresyon gelişebilir ya da devam edebilir. Farmakoterapi ve psikoterapiyi koruma etkeni olarak kullanabiliriz.

There are a lot of risk factors and protective factors which have substantial effects on depression pathogenesis. Genetic vulnerability, female gender, such personality traits as dependent and obsessive, insecure attachment style, stressful life events, chronic psychiatric or medical diseases, lack of social support have been associated with onset and unfavorable course of depression. On the other hand, protective factors are IQ scores above normal level, secure attachment style, high frustration tolerance and high self-esteem, having a social network; problem oriented coping style buffer or interrupt effects of stressful life events. None of risk factors alone can cause depression. If the sum of risk factors and protective factors is on negative side, depression may develop or continue. Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy may be used as protective factors.
