Amaç: Hekimin, ölüme ilişkin kişisel duygu ve tulumlarının hasta bakımını etkilediği bilinmektedir. Bu çalışmadaki amacımız, hekimlerin ölmekte olan hastalara ve tıbbi bakımlarına yönelik tutumlarını tanımlamak, cinsiyet, hekimlikte geçen yıl ve çalıştıkları kliniğe göre tutumlarının nasıl etkilendiğini belirlemek: böylelikle ölüm ve ölmekte olan hastayla ilgili eğitim ve destek ihtiyaçlarını ortaya çıkarmaktır. Yöntem: İ. Ü. İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi ’nde terminal hastalarla karşılaşan ve bakımlarını yürüten çeşitli kliniklerdeki hekimler bu çalışmaya alınmıştır. Cerrahi klinikler, dahiliye klinikleri, çocuk kliniği, onkoloji, anestezi-reanimasyon ve nörolojik bilimlerde çalışan hekimlerden gönüllü olan 461 ’i çalışmaya katılmıştır. Deneklerin yaş, cinsiyet, uzmanlık alanı ve hekimlikte geçirdikleri yıl gibi özellikleri de değerlendirmeye alındı. Bruhn ve ark. tarafından geliştirilen ölmekte olan hastaya tutum ölçeği tüm deneklere uygulandı. Bulgular ve tartışma: Bu çalışma, hekimlerin ölmekte olan hasta ve ailesi ile ilgili duygu, tutum ve iletişim güçlükleri yaşadıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Hekimlik süreleri, çalışılan klinik ve cinsiyet ölmekte olan hastaya tutumdaki değişikliklerde etkili bulunmuştu

Object: It is widely accepted that the emotions and the attitudes of the doctors towards death affect the patient care in some way. The aim of this study is; to define the attitudes of the doctors towards the dying patients and towards their treatment and care. Also, it is aimed to determine the effects of the clinic that the doctor is working in, the time since graduation and the sex of the doctor on the developing attitude; thus, to evaluate the doctors’ training and psychological needs in coping with the dying patients. Method: The medical doctors of Istanbul Medical School who are faced with the terminal dying patients, and who provide care to them are included in the study. Basically 461 doctors working at the departments of surgery, internal medicine, oncology, reanimation, pediatrics and neurology have voluntarily participated in the study. The attitudes of the subjects are correlated with their age, sex, specialty areas and the years of their professional experience. The attitude towards the dying patient scale that was developed by Bruhnet all was used in the study. Results and Conclusion: This study revealed that the doctors define emotional and communicational and coping difficulties with the dying patients and their families. The age and the sex of the doctor, the specialty clinic thar the doctor is working at, the duration of professional experience happened to be important factors in the development of what kind of an attitude is presented towards the dying patients and families.
