Samuel Beckett ‘in "Godot ‘yu Beklerken " oyununun hem "öncü " hem de her türden seyirciye seslenebilme özelliği taşıdığı belirlendikten sonra, oyunun eylemsiz karakterleri, ünlü trajedilerin etkin kahramanlarıyla karşılaştırılmakta ve Beckett ‘in, oyun kişileri yoluyla, trajik kahramanların son aşamada ulaştığı "bilinç"i dramatize ettiği söylenmektedir. Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" is defined as an avant-garde play that surprisingly strikes the various areas of association in the consciousness of the ordinary reader or spectator. The play is compared and contrasted to classical tragedies in which the “active " tragic hero finally realises the insignificance of his act and the inevitability of death a fact that reduces him to a "passive" sufferer. It is claimed that Beckett leaves out the tragic hero ’s line of action and focuses on the dramatisation of this final “position" the tragic hero finds himself in, namely that of a passive victim and a constant sufferer... The dramatic impact of Godot's unclear identity is discussed as an element that fills the play with magic and evokes a rich number of associations. The characters in the play are likened to music-hall actors or circus clowns that tell us a lot about the universal condition of man. The purpose of man ’s life is to die. Life is composed of "games" that man creates for himself while he is waiting for death. "Waiting" is a process that lengthens "time”, which is a relative concept. So long as one goes on playing his waiting game, he can keep death at a distance. The characters in "Waiting for Godot" are past the illusions that man indulges in so as to believe in his "significance" as a “being". For Beckett’s characters Godot is somebody whose "arrival” is both wanted and feared. Godot’s arrival will save them from a life of "suffering". Yet, they fear the treatment they might be getting from Godot. Will they be saved or damned? This Godot, who promises to come, but never does, sounds like an unpleasant joker that plays tricks on man all the time. Is he to be relied on? If not, is there anything else to rely on? This dramatic work is note worthy in that while it is closely associated with psychological dimensions in man's life and philosophical questions concerning man ’s position in the universe, it also throws light on how man acts and reacts in ordinary daily life. "Waiting for Godot" is like a clown show that touches the mind and the heart in its tragicomic universality.
