Whereas panic attacks are common, affecting about 12% of the general populalion it is ap­parent that only 3,5% of the population meet diagnostic criteria for panic disorder (PD). Early re­cognition of panic attacks as well as panic symptoms is important, since patients' quality of life is typically poor. Furthermore panic attacks are predictive in the development of other psychiatric di­sorders, such as anxiety disorders and depression. This review focuses on the recognition of panic disorder, the impact of comorbidity and the way how pharmacotherapy should be used in everyday clinical practice. It is intended to review the range of pharmacological management options as well as clinical guidelines available to the physician.

Panik ataklari genel nüfus içinde yaklasik % 12 gibi yüksek bir oranda görülmekle birlikte, nüfusun sadece % 3,5'inin Panik Bozuklugu (PB) için tani ölçütlerini karsiladigi bilinmektedir. Hastalarin yasam kalitesi özellikle kötü oldugu için, hem panik ataklarinin, hem panik belirtilerinin erken taninmasi önemlidir. Buna ek olarak, panik ataklari, anksiyete bozukluklari ve depresyon gibi baska psikiyatrik bozukluklarin gelisimini de öngörmeyi saglar. Bu incelemenin odak noktalari: Panik Bozuklugu'nun taninmasi, etkisi ve gündelik klinik uygulamada farmakolojik tedavinin kullanilis seklidir. Hem farmakolojik tedavi seçeneklerinin, hem de hekimin kullanimina sunulmus klinik yolgöstericilerin gözden geçirilmesi amaçlanmistir.
