Bir çok ülkede, yanlışlıkla mahkum edilen insanların sayısındaki artış nedeniyle, son yıllarda görgü tanığı belleğinin sınırlılıkları üzerine olan ilgide büyük bir artış olmuştur. Tanıkların şahitliği ve laboratuar çalışmalarından elde edilen bulgular, belleğimizin çok çeşitli değişkenlerden etkilenebileceğini göstermektedir. İnsan belleğinin ‘incinebilir' bu yönü, klinik ve adalet sistemi gibi belirli durumlarda özellikle kritiktir. Bellek hatalarına yol açan sistematik faktörlerin kendisi de, kanuni ve ayrıca bilimsel sorgulamanın odağındaki önemli bir konudur. Bu makalede belleğin; kodlama, hatırlama ve bildirme gibi kritik özelliklerine ve görgü tanıklığıyla ilişkili çalışmaların önemli doğurgularına odaklanılmıştır.

Recently, there has been much more interest in the limits of the eyewitness memory because of the growing number of wrongfully convicted individuals in many countries. Findings from the witness testified and laboratory studies, demonstrated that our memory could be influenced by the different various variables. This vulnerable structure of human memory is particularly prominent in certain situations, such as clinical and the criminal justice system. Furthermore, systematic factors leads to the memory errors are themselves a legitimate and important focus of scientific questioning. This article focussed upon the critical aspects of the memory such as encoding, recalling and reporting and also profound implications of the studies which are related the eyewitness situation.
