Psikolojinin küresel insan gelişimine yönelik çabalara önemli katkısı olabilir. Bu potansiyeli gerçekleştirebilmek için, psikolojinin insan gelişimi sorunlarının çözümü ile ilgili olduğunun kabul edilmesi ve katılımcı bir yaklaşım benimsenmesi gerekir. Daha belirgin olarak, sağlıklı insan gelişimi konusunda böyle bir yaklaşım, karşılaştırmalı standartların kullanımını içerir. Bu standartlar genelde toplumsal gelişme özlemlerini, özelde de gelişen insan potansiyelinin değişen hayat tarzlarına uygun şekilde desteklenmesini içerir. Okullaşma ve çocuğun okula hazırlanması, bu bağlamda önem kazanır. Burada boylamsal uygulamalı bir araştırma bir örnek olarak sunulmakta ve psikolojinin insan gelişimi sorunlarıyla nasıl ilgili olabileceğini göstermektedir.

Psychology has much to offer towards global human development efforts. To realize this potential, however, there needs to be a recognition of the relevance of psychology for the solution of human development issues and the assumption of an involved stance in approaching them. Examined within the more specific area of healthy human development, such a stance entails the use of comparative standards. These standards reflect societal aspirations toward development, in general, and their realization in optimizing human potential to fit with the demands of changing life styles, in particular. Schooling and school readiness of children assume importance in this context. A longitudinal intervention project is presented as a case in point, to demonstrate how psychology can be relevant to human development issues.
