Bu pilot nitelikteki araştırmanın amacı, öfke, kaygı ve depresif duygulanım eğilimlerinin temelinde yatan düşünce biçimlerini (bilişsel alt yapıyı) incelemektir. Çalışmaya, "nörotik", liseli', "üniversiteli'' ve "yönetici" altgruplarından oluşan 225 kişi katılmıştır.Kaygının bilişsel altyapısında sadece "iyiliğe iyilikle karşılık vermek gerekir" düşünce biçiminin yattığı gözlenmiştir. Öfke duygusunun temelinde, başkalarının gözündeki kişilik değerinin düşmemesi için hata yapılmaması gerektiği gibi bir düşünce biçimine rastlanmıştır. Depresif duygulanımın bilişsel altyapısında ise, kişinin başkalarının gözündeki değere duyarlı olması ve onlara yük olmaması gerektiğine ilişkin bir düşünce yapısının olduğu izlenimi edinilmiştir.Kişinin kendisini ispatlaması gerektiği,başkalarının kişinin mutluluğunu engellediği ve ilişkilerin planlandığı gibi yürümesi gerektiğine ilişkin düşünce biçimlerinin hem kaygı, hem öfke, hem de depresif duygulanımların bilişsel alt yapılarında yattığı gözlenmiştir. Üniversite sınavlarına hazırlanan liseli grubun düşünce biçiminin öfke, nörotik grubun ise depresif duygulanım yaratmaya daha yatkın oldukları izlenimi edinilmiştir. Üniversiteli ve yönetici grupların öfke kontrolünü sağlayan düşünce biçimlerine daha fazla katılma eğilimi içinde oldukları gözlenmiştir.

The major goal of the present pilot study was to drill into the thinking styles that might be underlying the dispositions of anxiety, anger and depression in a sample of 225 individuals consisting of college and high school students, managers and outpatient clients. Those who strongly agreed with the thought of "Favors should be returned by favors" displayed significantly higher levels of trait anxiety than those who strongly disagreed with this thought. It appeared that strong agreement with the thought of "One should not make mistakes in order to avoid losing self-worth in the eyes of others" was associated with higher leves of trait anger. The thinking style that seemed to be underlying a depressive disposition incorporated/sensitivity to self worth and the idea that "one should not be a burden to others". Thoughts that encompassed "the necessity that one should prove his/her self-worth to other", "that others hamper one's happiness" and ”that everything should go as planned" appeared to be underneath the dispositions of both anxiety, anger and depression. Comparisons of the subgroups indicated that while those students preparing for the college entrance exams endorsed thoughts that were associated with anger propensity, the outpatient clients refiected thoughts underlying a depressive tendency. The college students and the managers were found to be more inclined to endorse thoughts that were associated with the control of anger.
