Orta-sınıf ailelerine mensup ve davranış sorunu olmayan 352 erken adolesanının, kimlik modeli arayışında ailesinin rolünü, yine adolesanların kendi ifadelerinden anlamayı amaçladık. Bu amaçla, kimlik dönemi öncesi kişilik gelişim evrelerini ne derecede aşmış olduklarını belirleyici toplam 106 açık uçlu soru içeren 7 grup anketi haftada bir olmak üzere Mayıs 1999’dan başlayarak 7 hafta boyunca uyguladık. Ailelerin eğitim aracı olarak azar ve dayağa önemli ölçüde yer verdikleri, buna karşılık çok seyrek karşılaştığı için övgü gibi olumlu motivasyon yöntemlerinin çocukta şüphe ve çekince ile karşılandığını belirledik. Ebeveyn seven ve koruyan olma sıfatını büyük ölçüde yitirirken, güvenilen bir model olmaya ancak % 8 oranda layık görüldü.

From their own words of 352 14-year-old early adolescents, with no conduct disorders, 183 of whom were boys and 154 were girls, did we surveyed the role of the parents in their struggle of identity resolution. For this purpose, 7 groups of questionnaires containing 106 questions, in total, were handed out through 7 consecutive weeks, starting from May, 1999, to evaluate their previous developmental stages of personality. Scolding and beating were the major parenting tools of the families in modulating their children’s behaviour. Praise, as a positive motivator, was being accepted with suspicion and caution and anxiety by the subjects, because it was so seldom used by their parents. Consequently, the parents were not considered as “the loving and the protecting and the concerning” by a considerable number of adolescents. The parents were accepted as dependable models by only % 8 of the adolescents.
