Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu (OSB) yaşam boyu süren, tüm gelişimsel dönemlerde, birçok alanda bozucu etkilere sahip; bireyi, ailesi ve çevresiyle beraber olumsuz yönde etkileyen, heterojen, yaygın, gelişimsel bir bozukluktur. OSB genellikle yaşamın ilk yıllarında ortaya çıkmakta ve bireyin içinde bulunduğu gelişimsel döneme göre farklı klinik görünümler sergilemektedir. Bu yazımızda, literatürde mevcut olan geriye ve ileriye dönük desende yapılmış olan çalışmaların ışığında, OSB'nin klinik özellikleri, gidişatı, sonuçları ve prognozu, gelişimsel açıdan ele alınmaya çalışılmıştır. Sistematik şekilde literatürde yeterli verinin toplanabilmesi için yaşam boyu süren, uzunlamasına yapılmış standart çalışmalara ihtiyaç duyulduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Tanı koyma prosedürleri, örneklem seçimi ve genişliği açısından uygun standardize metodolojik yöntemlerin kullanımı, uzunlamasına takip süresi, takipten çıkan bireylerin tanımlanması gibi birçok kritik maddenin bu izlem çalışmalarında göz önünde bulundurulması gerekmektedir.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a life-long impairing heterogeneous disorder, characterized by severe and pervasive impairments in multiple areas of psychological development which effects the individual, his/her family and the environment. ASD is usually evident in the first years of life and has different clinical features according to the individual's developmental period. This paper aims to review the clinical features, course, outcomes and the prognosis of ASD in the light of prospective and retrospective studies in the literature within the scope of developmental aspects. Standardized life-long follow-up studies on ASD need to be conducted to collect the data systematically. Several critical issues such as; size of the study sample, the selection of the denominator population, the length of the follow-up time period, the number of subjects lost during the follow-up period and the diagnostic criteria in the study between entry and follow-up, should be considered by these follow-up studies.
