Dikkat eksikliği hiperaktivite bozukluğu (DEHB) çocukluk çağında başlayan, tedavi edilmediğinde bilişsel, sosyal ve duygusal alanlarda bedelleri ağır olabilen, yaşam boyu süren en sık nörogelişimsel bozukluklardan biridir. Biyolojik ve genetik etiyoloji sonucu meydana gelen bir bozukluk olması nedeniyle tedavisi farmakoterapidir. Psikostimülanlar başta olmak üzere ilaç tedavisi ilk sırada olup son derece etkin bir tedavi yöntemi olmasına rağmen çeşitli ilaç dışı tamamlayıcı/alternatif tıp yöntemleri tek başına ve/veya ilaç tedavisine ek olarak önerilmektedir. Mevcut yazın ve bilimsel verilere göre etkinlik ve güvenirlik bakımından tek başına farmakoterapinin yerini alabilecek hiçbir tamamlayıcı/alternatif tedavi yöntemi yoktur. Ancak psikososyal müdahaleler yanı sıra esansiyel yağ asitleri ve egzersizin ilaç tedavisi ile birlikte uygulanması umut vaat edicidir.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is among the most common neurodevelopmental disorders starting from childhood that has a lifelong course and has serious consequences regarding cognitive, social and emotional domains when left untreated. The main treatment of the disorder is pharmacotherapy due to its biological and genetic aetiology. Even though pharmacoterapy- psychostimulants in particular- is the first line recommended treatment and is proven to be rather effective, many different non pharmacological treatments/alternative medicine practices are also suggested for single and/or combined use together with pharmacological treatment. According to current literature and scientific data, no complementary/alternative treatment approach is currently present that could replace pharmacotherapy alone when efficiency and safety are taken into consideration. However the combined use of essential fatty acids and exercise with pharmacotherapy along with psychosocial interventions promise hope.
