Amaç: Bu çalışmada, Türkiye' deki ergenlerde, beden kitle indeksi ve beden imajının kendilik algısı üzerine etkisi, yaş ve cinsiyet kontrol edilerek araştırılmıştır. Yöntem: Çalışmaya 15-17 yaş grubundan 242 kız, 289 erkek olmak üzere 531 lise öğrencisi alınmıştır. Öğrencilere EKAP (Ergenler İçin Kendilik Algısı Profili) ve BISQ (Beden İmajından Hoşnut Olma Anketi) verilmiş ve her öğrencinin boyu ve kilosu ölçülerek beden kitle indeksi hesaplanmıştır. Ergenlerde Kendilik Algısı Profilinde ve Beden İmajından Hoşnut Olma Ölçeği'nde yer alan alanlarda yaş, cinsiyet ve beden ağırlığının etkisini saptamak üzere varyans analizleri; kendilik algısı ve beden imajı alanları arasındaki bağıntı için Pearson bağıntı analizi ve "global kendini değerlendirme" yi öngören etkenler için regresyon analizleri kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Kendilik algısının objektif bir ölçüm olan beden kitle indeksinden etkilenmediği, öte yandan öznel bir ölçüm olan beden imajıyla anlamlı derecede pozitif bağıntıları olduğu; beden imajının ise cinsiyet ve beden kitle indeksinden etkilendiği ve fazla kilolu grubun anlamlı olarak daha düşük puanlar aldığı saptanmıştır. Yine bu grupta kendilik algısı ve beden imajı alanları arasındaki anlamlı derecede pozitif bağıntı katsayıları en yüksek düzeydedir. EKAP'ın 9. altölçeği olan "kendiliğin genel değerlendirmesi"ni öngören etkenleri belirlemek için oluşturulan modelin varyansın %45'ini açıkladığını, okul başarısı, toplumsal kabul görme, fiziksel görünüm, ilişkilerdeki davranışlar, yakın arkadaşlık ve beden imajının öngören etkenler olduğu saptanmıştır. Tartışma: Ergenlerde beden imajından hoşnutsuzluk kendilik kavramı ve kendilik değerini olumsuz olarak etkilemektedir. Kendilik kavramı ve kendilik değeri düşük olan ergenlerin depresyon, anksiyete ve daha bir çok ruhsal bozukluğa yatkın olabilecekleri göz önünde bulundurulursa, beden imajından hoşnut olup olmamanın ergen üzerindeki etkileri psikiyatristlerin ve ergenlerde psikolojik danışma ve psikoterapi ile uğraşanların aklında bulunmalıdır.

Objective: In this study, the impact of body mass index and body image on the self-perception in the Turkish adolescents has been investigated by controlling age and gender. Method: A sample of 242 female and 289 male high school students, 15-17 [year]s of age, initially were given SPPA (Self-perception Profile for Adolescents) and BISQ (Body Image Satisfaction Questionnaire), and then each student's BMI has been calculated by actually performing height and weight measurements. Variance analysis has been used to determine the effects of gender, age and body mass index; Pearson correlation analysis has been employed for the relation between self-perception and body image and regression analysis has been used for the factors predicting global self-worth. Results: It has been observed that self-perception is not affected by body mass index which is an objective measure; however it is significantly related with the body image which is a subjective measurement. It is found that gender and body mass index have an impact on the body image and the overweight group have received significantly lower scores. This group has also the highest positive correlation coefficient between the self-perception and the body image. It has also been observed that the model that has been created to determine the factors predicting global self-worth accounts for 45% of the variance and that scholastic competence, social acceptance, physical appearance, behavioral conduct, close friendship and the body image are the predicting factors. Conclusion: In adolescents, dissatisfaction with body image has negative effects on self-concept and self-worth. Since the adolescents having low self-worth and self-concept are inclined to depression, anxiety and several psychiatric disorders, satisfaction with body image is an important factor that should be taken into account by psychiatrists in all psychological counseling and psychotherapy services for adolescents.
