Kanser ölüm sebepleri sıralamasında kardiyovasküler sistem hastalıklarının ardından ikinci sırada gelmektedir. Bunda artan kanser insidansının da etkisi olduğu düşünülmektedir. Kanser insidansında gözlenen artış, son yıllarda artan bilimsel ve toplumsal ilginin ve tanı yöntemlerinde elde edilen ilerlemelerin bir sonucudur. Sebep olduğu tükenmişlik, öfke, utanma, anksiyete, üzüntü, belirsizlik, korku hisleri nedeniyle birey ve toplum yaşamını büyük ölçüde etkilemektedir. Bu çalışma önemini kısaca vurgulamaya çalıştığımız kanser olgusuna yönelik koruyucu hekimlik uygulamalarından başlayarak, ölüm sürecini içeren döneme etik açıdan bakmayı amaçlamaktadır. Eldeki tedavi olanaklarının sınırlı olduğu kanserle mücadelede gerek yaşam tarzı gerekse iş güvenliği gibi korunma ve buna ek olarak kanser tarama uygulamalarının önemi vurgulanmıştır. Kanserin yalnızca teşhisi bile hasta ve hasta yakınları için üstesinden gelinmesi hayli zor psikolojik, sosyal, ekonomik bir yük oluşturmaktadır. Yataklı ve pahalı tedavilere erişimin yanı sıra, son yıllarda gündemde yer bulan alternatif tedavilerin durumu da etik açıdan değerlendirilmiştir. Özellikle terminal dönemde ağırlık kazanan bakım hizmetlerinin organizasyonu ve etik olarak yürütülmesi konusunda ülkemizde hissedilen ihtiyaç üzerinde durulmuştur. Metinde hasta ve hasta yakınlarının bakış açısına öncelik tanınmış, buna karşın ele alınan başlıklar elden geldiğince bütünlüklü olarak sunulmuştur. Kanser ve etik ilişkisinin tümünü kapsama savında olmayan bu çalışma, konuya ilişkin toplum ve birey düzeyinde yaşanan etik sorunların çözüm arayışına bir ölçüde ışık tutmayı hedeflemektedir.

Cancer is the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. It is claimed that the increase in the incidence of cancer has an effect on this situation. The developments in testing and diagnostic procedures is one of the reasons that affects increase in the incidence of cancer, as well as the increasing scientific and social interest. Cancer has a significant effect on individuals and society via exhaustion, anger, ashamedness, anxiety, sadness, uncertainty and fear it causes. The objective of this study is to assess cancer from an ethical point of view, from preventive medicine practices to dying process. Taking limited treatment alternatives into consideration, the importance of preventive practices such as life style choices, occupational safety and cancer screening practices are expressed. Even only the diagnosis of cancer may cause unbearable psychological, social, and economical burden on patients and their families. Scarce resources about hospitalization and expensive treatments, as well as hopelessness lead to a growing tendency to seek help from alternative treatment methods. The ethical issues raised from this situation is also taken into consideration in this article. The need and importance of organizing care services and ethical practice of care in Turkey gains special importance when the prolonging terminal stage is taken into consideration. In this study perspectives of patients and their families were prioritized, but a holistic approach was adopted in general. This work, which cannot be claimed to cover all the ethical issues about cancer, is aiming to contribute to enlightening multidimensional ethical problems that are being experienced at social and individual level.
