Amaç: Bu araştırma, bir üniversite araştırma hastanesinde çalışan hemşirelerin ve Sağlık Yüksek Okulu Hemşirelik Bölümü öğrencilerinin depresyonla ilgili tutum ve bilgilerinin tanımlanması ve ilişkili olabilecek etmenlerin saptanması amacıyla yapılmıştır.
Yöntem: Araştırmada, Psikiyatrik Araştırmalar ve Eğitim Merkez: (PAREM) tarafından geliştirilen anket formunun depresyon alt bölümü kullanılmıştır. Ankette demografik ve sağlık bilgileriyle ilgili 10, depresyonla ilgili 32 soru bulunmaktadır. Araştırmaya Gaziantep Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi çalışan hemşirelerinden 103, SağlıkYüksek Okulu Hemşirelik Bölümü öğrencilerinin 1 'inci ve 4'üncü sınıflarından 84 olmak üzere toplam 187 kişi alınmıştır.
Bulgular ve tartışma: Deneklerin büyük bölümü depresyonu "akıl hastalığından (%32) daha çok, bir "hastalık" (%92) olarak tanımlamışlardır. Depresyonu sosyal olarak reddetme eğilimi, hemşirelerde, kırsal kesimde yaşayan halka göre daha düşükken büyük şehirde yaşayan halka göre daha yüksektir. Öğrencilerde çalışanlara göre daha fazla olağanlaştırma eğilimi varken, çalışan hemşirelerde ise depresyonlu kişileri akıl hastası olarak sınıflama eğilimi daha fazladır. Bu durum depresyonun sıradan bir insan tepkisi olmayıp hastalık olarak ele alınması gerektiğini düşünmelerinden kaynaklanabilir. Nitekim "depresyon akıl hastalığıdır" diyenlerin %98.4'ü aynı zamanda "depresyon bir hastalıktır" demiştir.
Çoğunluk depresyonun tedavi edilebilen bir hastalık olduğunu, tedavi için ilk başvurunun doktor ve özellikle psikiyatri uzmanına yapılmasının; tedavi yöntemi olarak ilaç kullanımının uygun olduğunu belirtmişlerdir. Hemşirelerin bir çoğu antidepresanlarla ilgili yanlış ve eksik bilgiye sahiptir.

Objective: This study was done to define the knowledge and attitudes of the nurses working at a Medical Faculty Research Hospital and also the students of the Health College Nursing Department.
Methodology: For this study 103 nurses working at the Gaziantep University Medical Faculty Research Hospital and 84 students from the first and fourth grades; that is totally 187 people were taken. In the study, the subsection of the questionnaire containing 32 items which was improved by the researchers at "Psychological Researche and Training Center" (PAREM) was used. This questionnaire was also used in the project of "Attitude of The Public towards Psychological Illness" done by PAREM. In the questionnaire there are 10 questions related to demographic variables and health knowledge, and 32 questions about depression.
Results and discussion: Most of the subjects (%92) defined depression as an "illness" much more than a "mental illness" (%32). The tendency to reject depressive disorder socially was lower among the nurses than people in rural areas, but it was higher than the people in urban areas. However, when the students and working nurses were compared, student nurses had higher tendency to normalize this illness, and the people having depression were considered as mentally ill. Perhaps, this situation was resulted from the opinion of considering depression not as an ordinary reaction of people, but considering it as an illness to be treated. As a matter of fact, in our study those who accept depression as a mental illness also see it as an illness (%98.4).
Most of the subjects pointed out that depression is an illness which can be treated. First choice of treatment is seeing a doctor and especially a psychiatrist; as a treatment method pharmacotherapy is found to be necessary. Nevertheless, it was determined that most of the nurses have wrong and lacking knowledge about depression and its treatment
