Amaç: Duygudurum bozukluklarının ortaya çıkışı açısından doğum sonrası dönem riskli bir dönemdir. Ani hormonal değişimler psikopatolojinin ortaya çıkışında önemli bir etkiye sahip olabilir. Gebelik esnasında artan serum kolesterol düzeyleri doğum sonrasında ani bir düşüş gösterir. Bu çalışmanın amacı doğum sonrası başlangıçlı depresyon ile serum kolesterol düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktır. Yöntem: DSM-IV'e göre doğum sonrası başlangıçlı major depres­yonu olan 15 hasta ile yaş ve vücut ağırlığı açısından eşleştirilmiş doğum sonrası başlangıcı olmadan major depresyonu olan 15 hasta çalışmaya alındı. Her iki grubun serum kolesterol düzeyleri karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: Doğum sonrası depresyonu olan hastaların serum kolesterol ve LDL değerleri doğum sonrası başlangıçlı olmayan depres­yonlu hastalara göre anlamlı derecede daha düşük bulundu. Sonuç: Bu çalışmanın sonuçları düşük serum koleste­rol düzeyleri ile doğum sonrası başlangıçlı depresif atak arasında bir ilişki olabileceğini düşündürmektedir.

Objectives: Onset of major depressive disorder is often related with postpartum period. DSM-IV allows that major depressive episode is specified with postpartum onset. The onset of depressive episode at the postpartum period may be associated with sudden hormonal changes. The aim of the study was to investigate relationship between postpartum depression and serum cholesterol level. Method: Fifteen depressed patients with postpartum onset and 15 depressed patients without postpartum onset were included in the study. All the patients met DSM-IV criteria. Groups were matched for age and weight. Results: The patients with postpartum onset had lower serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels than the patients without postpartum onset. Conclusion: Our results suggest that there may be an association between postpartum depression and low serum cholesterol level.
