“The Complex of the Dead Mother” written by Andre Green can be considered as the continuation of Winnicott’s article ‘The Fear of Breakdown” (1974). The two texts seem to be complementary insofar as they concern early trauma caused by environmental deficiency. In ‘The Complex of the Dead Mother”, the problem of mourning is related to the sudden change of the maternal imago. The young child abruptly confronts with a mother, who has lost her vitality and joy. She is aloof, cold and indifferent. This situation is perceived as a catastrophe by the child, who can no longer recognize his (her) mother, who is immersed in a deep depression. And that is very scaring for the child. The narcissistic loss here concerns not only the love of the mother, but also that of signification.
