Genel sistemler kuramına göre aile birbiriyle ilişkili ve bağımlı alt sistemlerin ve işlevsel süreçlerin olduğu, karmaşık, kural temelli, açık bir sistemdir. İyi işlevsellik gösteren aileler için alt sistemlerin sınırlarının, kişiler arası rollerinin, hiyerarşik işlevlerinin, birlikte evrilmelerinin, koalisyonların, güç dağılımının kontrol ve sorumluluk dağılımının sağlanmış olması sözkonusudur. Aile aynı anda paradoksal olarak hem değişim, hem de stabilite isteği gösterir. Belirli bir sabit durumu korumak için değişime direnme eğilimindedir. Aile sistemi değişime direnç gösterse de her üyesinin gelişim aşamasına uygun olacak şekilde kendisini uyumlandırarak varlığını sürdürür. Her eylem ve değişim aile sisteminde yer alan her bir bireyi etkiler. Bu nedenle ilişkilerin belirlendiği, karşılıklı ve birlikte nasıl değişim gösterdiklerinin yeniden tanımlandığı döngüsel sorgulamanın yapılması gereklidir. Sistemik aile terapistleri döngüsel sorgulama ile problemin devamı ve/veya çözümü ile ilgilenirler.

According to a general systems theory, family is a complex, rule-based, open system which has interdependent, interrelated sub-systems and functional processes. For families to function well, subsystems must maintain boundaries, interpersonal roles, hierarchical functioning, mutual co-evolution, coalitions and distribution of power, control and responsibility. Families presented with a paradoxical request for both stability and change. They tend to resist change in order to maintain a steady state. Despite resistance to change, family system constantly adapts to maintain itself in response to developmental stages of each members. Each action or change affects every other person in the family system. Because of this, circular questioning must designed to punctuate relationships, re-defining them in such way as to show up reciprocity and promote co-evolution. Systemic family therapists are interested in the maintenance and/or solving of problems via circular questioning.
