Nükleer tıp, "tracer" (izleyici) prensiplerini kullanarak radyonüklidler aracılığıyla canlı organizmadaki biyokimyasal ve fizyolojik olayları izleyerek ölçen ve görüntüleyen bir bilim dalıdır. Nükleer tıp bilimi aynı zamanda radyonüklidlerin tedavi amacıyla kullanılmalarını da kapsamaktadır. Görüntülemede elektromanyetik karakterde gama ışınımı yapan radyonüklidler kullanılırken, tedavide daha ağır ve iyonizasyon gücü yüksek, partiküler karakterdeki beta veya alfa ışınları saçarak bozunan radyoizotoplardan yararlanılmaktadır
