Kronik yorgunluk sendromu (KYS), halsizlik, yorgunluk ile karakterize, farklı ve değişik şiddette klinik belirtilerle kendini ortaya koyan, yeti yitimine yol açan karmaşık bir hastalıktır. Hastalar 6 aydan uzun süren, yatak istirahati ile düzelmeyen, mental veya fiziksel egzersiz ile çok daha kötüleşen, genellikle iyilik ve alevlenme dönemleriyle seyreden halsizlikten muzdariptir. Bunun yanında baş ağrısı, tekrarlayan boğaz ağrısı, kas-eklem ağrıları gibi özgün olmayan pek çok konstitüsyonel şikayetle birlikte bazı kognitif bozukluklardan yakınırlar. Tanısı için halsizliğe sebep olabilecek diğer bir çok hastalığın ekarte edilmesi gerekir. Yıllarca sürebilen bu bozukluğun henüz sebebi ve özgül bir belirtisi tanımlanamamıştır. Ancak bu konuda yoğun çalışmalar sürdürülmektedir.

Chronic fatigue syndrome, or CFS, is a debilitating and complex disorder characterized by profound fatigue that is not improved by bed rest. Patients may become exhausted with only light physical or mental exertion. In addition to these key defining characteristics, patients report various nonspecific symptoms, including weakness, muscle pain, impaired memory and/or mental concentration, insomnia, and post-exertional fatigue lasting more than 24 hours. In some cases, CFS can persist for [year]s. This incapacitating fatigue can be associated with a wide range of ilnesses , other causes of fatigue must be ruled out before a diagnosis of CFS can be made. The cause of CFS has not been identified and no specific diagnostic tests are available yet, but the disease is the focus of intense research.
