Çocukluk ve ergenlik dönemi depresif bozuklukları oldukça yaygındır. Onsekiz yaşından önce yaklaşık 5 gençten 1’i klinik olarak belirgin bir epizot yaşar. Bu bozukluklar artmış intihar düşüncesi ve davranışı, diğer psikiyatrik bozukluklar, davranış sorunları, psikososyal ve akademik işlevsellikte sorunlar ile ilişkilidir. Pediatrik depresyonun erken tanısı ve tedavisi ilerideki psikopatolojileri önleyebilir. Bu yaş grubunda klinik görünüm atipik olduğu ve tanılama araçları ve terapiler erişkinlerde kullanılanlarla aynı olduğu için çocuk ve ergenlerdeki depresif bozuklukların tanı ve tedavisi hala sorunludur. Bu yazı çocuk ve ergenlerdeki depresyonun epidemiyolojisi, klinik özellikleri, tedavi ve gidişini gelişimsel özelliklere göre tartışmaktadır.

Depressive disorders in childhood and adolescence is widely prevalent. Nearly one in five youths experiencing a clinically significant episode before age 18. This disorders is associated with increased risk for suicidal ideation and behavior, other psychiatric disorders, behavior problems and poor psychosocial, academic functioning. The early recognition and treatment of pediatric depression is protective for later psychopathology. Diagnosis and treatment of depressive disorders in child and adolescents are still problematic because in this age group the clinical presentation is atypical, and the diagnostic tools and the therapies are the same as that used for the adults.This article discusses the epidemiyology, clinical features, treatments, and course of depression in children and adolescents according to developmental features.
