Tüm mental süreçler beyin işlevlerinin sonucu gerçekleşmektedir. Mental bozuklukların oluşumunda genetik
değişimler kadar sosyal ve gelişimsel faktörler önemlidir. Psikoterapi, öğrenme yoluyla gen ekspresyonunda
değişimlere yol açarak sinaptik bağlantıları değiştirip güçlendirmektedir. Bir kişinin diğeriyle kurduğu
duygusal bağ olarak tanımlanan bağlanmanın psikiyatrik açıdan önemi büyüktür. Bebek, olumlu afektler için
fırsat sağlayan ve olumsuz afektleri azaltan bakımverene sağlıklı bir şekilde bağlanacaktır. Bağlanmada özellikle
sağ kortekste geniş alan kaplayan orbital prefrontal bölgeler kritik öneme sahiptir. Afektif nörobilimsel
çalışmalar, duygusal ve sosyal yoksunluğun, kortikal ve subkortikal limbik bölgelerdeki sinaptik yapılanmayı
etkileyerek, bunun sonucu oluşan davranışsal ve bilişsel defektlere yol açan nörolojik skarlar oluşturduğunu
göstermektedir. Fonksiyonel beyin görüntüleme çalışmaları psikiyatrik müdahaleler ile beyin fonksiyonlarında
oluşan değişimleri gözlemeye olanak sağlamaktadır. Obsesif kompulsif bozukluk, fobiler ve depresyon
gibi psikiyatrik bozukluklarda beyin aktivitesinde psikoterapi ile ilişkili değişimleri ele alan çalışmalar mevcuttur.
Bu çalışmalar, psikoterapi alanındaki araştırmalarının ihtiyacı olan biyolojik yaklaşımın önünü açmaktadır.

All mental processes derive from operations of the brain. Social or developmental factors as well as genetic alterations are very important in the
formation of mental disorders. Psychotherapy produces changes in gene expression through learning and alters the strength of synaptic connections.
Attachment, which is defined as an emotional bond between one person and another, is a very important concept for psychiatry.
The baby becomes attached to the caregiver who expands opportunities for positive affect and minimizes negative affect. Orbital prefrontal
areas especially expanded in the right cortex, are critically involved in attachment functions. Researches in affective neuroscience demonstrate
that emotional and social deprivation interferes with the normal development of the synaptic architecture of cortical and subcortical limbic
areas, and leads to neurologic scars that underlie subsequent behavioral and cognitive deficits. Functional brain imaging studies allow us to
observe changes in brain functions induced by psychiatric interventions. There are studies demonstrating psychotherapy associated changes
in brain activity in psychiatric disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias and depression. These studies give way to biologic
approach necessary for psychotherapy research.
