Şizofreni hastalarında saptanan cinsiyete ilişkin farklılıklar, öteden beri araştırmacıların ilgisini çekmiştir. Premenstruel dönemde psikotik bulguların alevlenmesi ve hastaneye yatışların fazla olması, gebelikte relapsların azalması, doğum sonrası ve menopoz döneminde psikoz görülme riskinin artması gibi klinik gözlemler ve konuyla ilgili çok sayıda çalışma, gonodal steroid salınımının, kadınlarda psikozun karakterini belirleyebileceğine işaret etmektedir. Şizofrenide yaygın hipoöstrojenizm varlığından söz edilir. Son dönemlerde ise buna ek olarak, östrojenin psikozdan koruyucu etkileri olduğu ve antipsikotik benzeri etki yapabileceği varsayımı güçlenmektedir. Kadın seks hormonlarıyla ilgili kuram geliştirilirse, östrojenlerin antipsikotik olarak veya tedaviye yardımcı ajan olarak kullanıma girmesi mümkün olabilecektir. Bu yazıda şizofrenide östrojenin koruyucu etkileriyle ilgili literatür gözden geçirilmiştir.

For long, the investigators have been interested in gender differences in schizophrenia. Observed psychotic exacerbations and more hospitalizations at premenstruel phase, less relapses in pregnancy, more psychotic attacks in postpartum and also in menaposal period and other clinical investigations about this subjects have pointed that gonadal steroids determined the types and characteristics of schizophrenia in women. The authors report hypoestrogenism in schizophrenia. On the other hand, some authors point that estrogens have protective and neuroleptic like effects in schizophrenia. If these effects are confirmed, estrogen preperats may be use in clinical practice as a main or a helper antipsychotic drug in the near future. In this article we summarized some literatures about protective effects of estrogens in schizophrenia.
