Destekleyici psikoterapi kavramı 20. yüzyılın başlarında amaçları psikoanalizin amaçlarından çok daha sınırlı bir tedavi yaklaşımı olarak geliştirilmiştir. Destekleyici psikoterapi hastanın kişiliğini değiştirmek yerine ciddi psikiyatrik hastalıkların yeniden alevlenmseini önlemek amacıyla hastanın yakınmaları ile başa çıkma konusunda veya bir kişinin geçici problemine yönelik yardımcı olmayı amaçlar. Destekleyici psikoterapide kullanılan temel yöntemler övgü, güvence, cesaretlendirme ve yeniden çerçeve çizmedir. Ayrıca destekleyici psikoterapi dışavurumcu ve davranışçı bilişsel terapi tekniklerini de kullanan eklektik bir terapidir. Destekleyici psikoterapinin krize müdahalede ve şizofreni, depresyon, anksiyete bozuklukları, madde kullanım bozuklukları, kişilik bozuklukları ve anoreksiya nervosa tedavisinde etkinliği gösterilmiştir.

The concept of supportive psychotherapy was developed early in the twentieth century to descripe a treatment approach with objectives more limited than the objectives of psychoanalysis. The objective of supportive psychotherapy is not to change the patient's personality but to help the patient cope with symptoms in order to prevent relapse of serious psychiatric illness or to help a person with a transient problem. Praise, reassurance, encouragement and reframing were the basic techniques which used in supportive psychotherapy. Also supportive psychotherapy was an eclectic therapy which used techniques of expressive and cognitive behavioral therapy. It was demonstrated that, supportive psychotherapy was effective in crisis intervention and in the treatment of schizophrenia, depression, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, personality disorders and anorexia nervosa.
