Ernst Cassirer (1874- 1945), 20. yüzyıl felsefesinin önde gelen isimlerinden olup, insan ve kültür felsefesine yapmış olduğu katkılarla anılmaktadır. Yüzün üstünde yapıt veren ve yaşamının son yıllarında kaleme aldığı, görüşlerini bir özet halinde veren "İnsan Üstüne Bir Deneme" kitabı nedeniyle ele alacağımız Cassirer, Breslau'da doğmuştur. Berlin, Heidelberg Münih ve Marburg Üniversitelerinde hukuk, edebiyat, matematik ve felsefe eğitimi gören Cassirer, doktorasını da Marburg da Yeni Kantçı Marburg Okulu'nun iki önemli temsilcisi olan Hermen Cohen ve Paul Nathorp'un yanında yapmıştır.
