American Journal of Psychiatry'nin yayın yönetmeni Dr. Nancy Andreasen derginin Eylül 1994 sayısında yayımlanan "Changing Concepts of Schizophrenia and the Ahistorical Fallacy (Şizofrenide Değişen Yaklaşımlar ve Tarihi Unutma Yanılgısı)" adlı yazısında DSM-III sonrası dönemde psikiyatrik tanılarda ortaya çıkan değişikliklere ue hu değişikliklerin psikiyatri uygulaması üzerine etkilerine değinmektedir. Andreasen psikiyatri alanındaki tarihsel gelişimi gözardı edip DSM tanılarını temel almanın, hem eğilim hem de uygulama açısından sakıncalar doğuracağını vurgulamaktadır.
DSM-IV'ün gündeme gelmesiyle birlikte, yine aynı derginin Mart 1993'te yayımlanan ve Amerikan psikiyatrisinin II. Dünya Savaşı'ndan sonraki gelişimini, DSM-III'ün hazırlanma sürecini tarihsel açıdan ele alan "DSM-III and the Transformation of American Psychiatıy: A History" adlı yazıyı kısaltarak aktarmayı uygun gördük.
