In this article, biochemistry and physiology of pigments present in the blood and nervous system are reviewed briefly.
It is emphasized that to studying pigments in nervous system especially those in C.S.F. is important: in diagnosing the cerebrovascular diseases and helpful in making decisions for anticoagulant therapy, in the aged the increased amounts of lipofuscin and melanin in the nervous system and skin, depigmentation of substantia nigra, in parkinsonism suggests the possible correlation between senility and pigments.
Attention is called upon the possibility that research on pigments may light the etiopathogenesis of senility.
