Amaç: Uyanıklık ve uyku ritminin oksidan-antioksidan sistemle ilişkili
olduğu ve/veya bu sistemde değişikliklere yol açtığı ileri sürülmektedir.
Uyanıklıkta serbest radikallerde artış olduğu, bunların uyku sırası
nda temizlendiği iddia edilmiştir. Hayvanlarda kısa süreli ve uzun
süreli uyku deprivasyonunun oksidan-antioksidan sisteme etkileri ise
çelişkili sonuçlar sunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada 24 saat uykusuzluğun
kan ve tükrük örneklerinde oksidan/antioksidan durum üzerine olan
etkilerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmada 11 sağlıklı gönüllü hemşirede 24 saatlik
uykusuzluk sonrası sabah, normal uyku sonrası sabah ve akşam
tükrük ve kan örneklerinin oksidan ve antioksidan durumları belirlenmiştir.
Hemşirelerden elde edilen kan ve tükrük örneklerinde üstte
anılan 3 farklı dönemde lipit peroksidasyonun göstergesi olan malondialdehit
(MDA) düzeyleri ve süperoksit radikali üreten ksantin oksidaz
(XO) aktivitesi ile hücre içi antioksidan enzimlerden süperoksit dismutaz
(SOD), glutatyon peroksidaz (GSH-Px) ve katalaz (CAT) aktiviteleri
ölçüldü.
Bulgular: Hemşirelerden akşam, 24 saat uykusuzluk ve normal uyku
sonrası sabah alınan örneklerde çalışılan parametreler arasında istatistiksel
olarak anlamlı fark bulunmadı.
Sonuç: Bu bulgular ile 24 saatlik uykusuzluğun eritrosit, plazma ve
tükrükte oksidan ve antioksidan dengesini etkilemediği sonucuna varı
ldı.

Objective: It is suggested that the circadian rhythms of sleep and
wakefulness might be related to oxidant/antioxidant status. It has
been proposed that free radicals or oxygen reactive species
produced during waking are removed during sleep. However, the
effects of short and prolonged sleep deprivation on oxidantantioxidant
status in animals are on debate. The aim of this study was
to determine the effect of 24 hours sleep deprivation on the oxidantantioxidant
status in blood and saliva samples.
Methods: Eleven healthy nurse were chosen as the study group,
blood and saliva were obtained from the nurses. In these samples,
malondialdehyde (MDA), xanthine oxidase (XO), superoxide
dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT)
activities were measured.
Results: There were no statistically significant differences in enzyme
activities and MDA levels among the samples taken after the normal
sleep and before and after the sleep deprivation.
Conclusion: According to the results, it was concluded that 24 hours
sleep deprivation did not influence oxidant/antioxidant status in
erythrocytes, plasma and saliva from the subjects.
