Amaç: Alkol bağımlılarının nörobilişsel işlev düzeyleri üzerinde yapılan çalışmalarda alkol bağımlılığında özellikle bellek işlevleri ve yürütücü işlevlerde bozulmalar gösterilmiştir. Ancak bu bozuklukların alkol bağımlılığının gelişiminden önce mi var olduğu, yoksa alkol kullanımının bir komplikasyonu mu sayılacağı sorusu henüz tam olarak cevaplandırılamamıştır. Bu çalışmada bu soruyu bir kez daha ele almak amacıyla alkol bağımlısı erkek hastaların dikkat, bellek ve yürütücü işlevleri değerlendirilerek bunların alkol kullanım öyküsüyle ilişkileri araştırılmıştır.

Yöntem: Çalışmanın örneklemini, en az 5 yıllık eğitimi olan, en fazla üç haftalık detoksifikasyon dönemini tamamlayan, yaşları 32-51 arası değişen 32 alkol bağımlısı erkek hasta oluşturmuştur. Bu gruba; Beck Depresyon Ölçeği, Spielberger Durumluk-Sürekli Kaygı Envanterleri, İşaretleme, İşitsel- Sözel Öğrenme, Stroop ve WAIS- Küplerle Desen testleri uygulanılmıştır. Test puanları ile düzenli içmeye kadar geçen süre, bağımlıca içme süresi ve son dönemdeki içmeme süresi arasındaki ilişkiler incelenmiştir.

Bulgular: Düzenli alkol tüketimine kadar geçen süre ile Stroop alt testleri, İşaretleme Testi, Küplerle Desen Testi puanları, İşitsel-Sözel Öğrenme Testi içindeki anlık bellek, uzun süreli bellek, tanıma, en yüksek öğrenme puanları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmamıştır, buna karşılık düzenli alkol tüketimine kadar geçen süre ile İşitsel-Sözel Öğrenme Testi-kritere ulaşma puanı arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ve pozitif bir korrelasyon bulunmuştur. Düzenli alkol tüketiminin başlangıcından sonraki toplam içme süresi ile Stroop alt testlerinin, İşaretleme Testinin verimlilik puanları, Küplerle Desen Testi puanı, İşitsel-Sözel Öğrenme Testi puanları arasındaki korrelasyonlar (anlık bellek alt testi dışında) istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmamıştır.

Sonuç: Alkol bağımlılarında nörobilişsel işlevlerin bileşenlerinin tümünün alkolün doğrudan etkisine bağla- namayacağı söylenebilir. Alkol bağımlılığının gelişiminde nörobilişsel işlevlerin olası etkilerinin tanımlanması için ileri çalışmalara gereksinim vardır.

Objective: In the studies done on neuropsychological functions in alcohol dependence, especially memory and executive functions were shown to be disturbed. However, the question of whether such disturbances were present before the development of alcohol dependence or whether they should be considered as complications of alcohol use has not been answered yet. In order to find an answer to this question, attention and memory functions of alcohol- dependent male patients were assessed and their relati- onships with alcohol consumption were investigated in the present study.

Method: A total of 32 male alcohol-dependent patients aged 50 [year]s or younger, with at least 5 [year]s of educational history who had gone through no more than 3 weeks of detoxification formed the study population. Beck Depression Inventory, Spielberger State and Trait Anxiety Inventories, Verbal and Nonverbal Cancellation Test (VNCT), Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning (AVLT), Stroop, and WAIS-Block Design Tests were used. Relationships between test scores and time to stereotypical alcohol consumption history were determined.

Results: No significant relationships were found betwe- en Stroop subscores, Cancellation Test, Block Design Scores, immediate memory, long term memory, highest learning, and recognition scores of AVLT. However, a positive and statistically significant correlation was found between AVLT and time to stereotypical alcohol consumption. Correlations between length of duration of addictive drinking and and time to stereotypical alcohol consumption were determined. Stroop subscores, Cancellation Test efficiency scores, Block Design and AVLT scores (except immediate memory subscore) were not found to be statistically significant.

Conclusion: It can be suggested that not all of the components of neuropsychological functions can be related to the direct effects of alcohol. Further studies are needed to define possible effects of neuropsychological functions in the development of alcohol dependence.
