Sokakta Çalışan ya da Yaşayan Çocuklarda Sigara Alkol ve Madde Kullanma Prevelansı ve Etkileyen Faktörler

Amaç: Bu çalışmada Mersin’de sokakta çalışan ya da yaşayan çocukların madde kullanma durumunun saptanması amaçlandı.
Yöntem: Kesitsel tipte planlanan bu çalışma, Nisan-Eylül 2002 tarihleri
arasında yürütüldü. Çalışma evreninden örnekleme yapılmaksızın, tespit edilebilen çocukların tamamı çalışmaya alındı. Veriler yüzyüze
soru cevap tekniği kullanılarak toplandı.
Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan 916 kişinin 896’sı (%97.8) erkek ve yaş ortalaması
11.8±2.2 yıldı. Çocukların 818’inin (%89.3) sokakta çalışan çocuk
olduğu saptandı. Çocuklar arasında sigara, alkol ve diğer maddelerin
yaşam boyu en az bir kez kullanma oranlarının sırasıyla
%67.4, %10.8, %6.6; halen kullanma oranlarının ise sırasıyla %20.3,
%2.7, %3.2 olduğu tespit edildi. Sokakta geceleyenlerde, okulu terk
edenlerde, yaşı büyük olanlarda, şiddete maruz kalanlarda sigara,
alkol ve diğer maddelerin kullanılma oranlarının daha yüksek olduğu
belirlendi.
Sonuç: Sokakta gecelemek ya da yaşamak; alkol, sigara ve madde
kullanmayı artıran başlıca faktör olarak saptandı. Ailenin çocuk üzerindeki
denetiminin azalması, çocukların başta sigara ve alkol olmak
üzere, diğer maddelere yönelmesine neden olabilmektedir.
Prevalance of cigarette, alcohol and substance use in children working or living on streets and the influencing factors
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the current status of
substance use among the children working or living on the streets of
Mersin, Turkey.
Method: This study was designed as a cross-sectional study and was
performed in the period between April and September 2002. All the
street children encountered were enrolled in the study without
performing any sampling process.
Results: Of 916 individuals participating in the study, 816 (97.8%) were
males and the mean age was 11.8±2.2 [year]s. 818 (89.3%) of the
children were working in the streets. The rates of smoking and use of
alcohol and the other substances at least once in lifetime was found
to be 67.4%, 10.8%, and 6.6% respectively, while the rates of current
use of these substances were 20.3%, 2.7%, and 3.2%, respectively.
The rates of cigarette smoking, substance abuse, and alcohol use
were higer in those who shelter in streets overnightly, school
dropouts, older ones, and has been exposed to violence.
Conclusion: Sleeping or living on the streets was found to be the
primary factors that increase the prevalence of alcohol use, smoking
and substance abuse. Family control mechanisms are vital to prevent
the children to abuse substances and loosing family control leads to
high incidence of the use of so called substances by children.
