Psikiyatri ve aile arasında sürekli değişen ve ikircikli bir ilişki söz konusudur. Bu değişime bir ışık tutmak, ailenin psikiyatri alanında tam olarak nerede durduğunu görebilmek adına ailenin psikiyatrideki yerinin tarihsel süreçte değerlendirilmesi önemlidir. Aile bu süreçte kimi zaman ruhsal bozuklukların sebebi olarak görülürken kimi zaman da tedavinin vazgeçilmez bir parçası olarak görülmüştür. Bu tarihsel süreci daha net görebilmek ve anlayabilmek için psikiyatrinin aileyi ele alış şeklini üç döneme ayırarak incelemeye çalıştık. İlk olarak ahlakçı bakış egemenliğindeki, ruhsal sorunların toplumsal sapma olarak görüldüğü dönemle başlayarak ailenin bu baskı döneminde psikiyatride nasıl bir yeri olduğunu görmeye çalışacağız. İkinci dönemde İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası toplumsal ve aile ilişkilerinin yeniden değerlendirilmesi ile değişen bakış açısının ve ailenin psikiyatride değişime uğrayan yerinin üzerinde duracağız. Son olarak ekonomik değişimlere de bağlı olarak ailenin bakım vericiye dönüşme sürecini ele alacağız. Psikiyatrinin tarihsel süreçte aileye bakışı ve ele alışı farklılaşmış ama aile her zaman psikiyatride önemli yeri olan bir toplumsal yapı olma özelliğini korumuştur.

There is a constantly changing and ambivalent relationship between psychiatry and family. It is important to keep a light on this change and to evaluate the place of the family in psychiatry in the historical process in order to be able to see exactly where the family stands in psychiatry. While the family is sometimes seen as the cause of mental disorders in this process, it is sometimes seen as an indispensable part of cure. In order to be able to see and understand this historical process more clearly, we tried to examine the psychiatry's view of the family by taking three turns. First of all, we will try to see what kind of place family is in this repressive period starting with the period when the mental problems are seen as social deviation. In the second period, after the Second World War, we will evaluate where the changing point of view and the family's psychiatry have changed with the reassessment of social and family relations. Finally, depending on economic changes, we will look at the process of turning the family into caregivers. Historically, the psychiatry's view of the family has been changed, but the family has always maintained its place as a social structure in psychiatric domain.
