Kafeinin bütün etkileri bilinmekle beraber, aşağıdaki bazı etkilerinin psikiyatrik belirtilerle ilgili olduğu bilinmektedir: 1) Norepinefrin sekresyonunda anlamlı bir artış, 2) Dopamin başta olmak üzere merkezi kateşolamin postsinaptik reseptörlerde duyarlılık artışı, 3) Adenozin ve diğer pürinlerin merkezi etkilerinin inhibisyonuyla, benzodiazepin resetörlerinin kompetetif antogonizması. Antikonvülsan olarak kullanılan benzodiazepinlerle adenozin arasında bir bağlantı olduğu ve kafeinin de konvülsan etkilerinin olduğu bilinir. Biz bu çalışmada kafeinle EKT arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırdık ve kafeinin özellikle ilk 4 EKT de manik hastalarda konvülsif eşiği düşürdüğünü tesbit ettik.

Neuropharmacological effects of caffeine are not completely clarified but the following effects undoubtedly contribute to psychiatric manifestations: 1) a significant increase in norepinephrine excretion, 2) sensitization of central catecholamine postsynaptic receptors, particularly those for dopamine, and 3) inhibition of the CNS effects of adenosine or other endogenous purines, or competetive antagonism of naturally occuring benzodiazepine receptors. Given the tentative relationship between adenosine and the BZs, the latter of which are used as anticonvulsants, and the fact that caffeine have convulsant activity. In this study we investigated the relation between caffeine and electricshock the convulsive threshold especially in first 4 Electric shock treatments.
