Şizoaffektif psikozlar genel olarak afektif ve şizofrenik belirtilerin birarada bulunduğu psikoz tipi olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bu yazıda şizoafektif psikozun tanımı ve tanı ölçütlerinin farklı sınıflama sistemlerindeki yerleri ve bunlarda zamanla görülen değişmeler incelenmiştir. Bugüne kadar yapılmış araştırmalar şizoafektif psikozda güçlü bir genetik geçiş olasılığına işaret etmektedir. Şizoafektif psikoz konusunda yapılan belli başlı genetik araştırmalar tartışıldıktan sonra, bugünki bilgilerimizle konunun henüz bir açıklığa kavuşmadığı gösterilmiştir. Kesin bir genetik etiyoloji bulununcaya kadar, şimdilik bu tanı kategorisinin korunması ve tanı, prognoz ve tedavi açılarından anlam taşıyabilecek tanı koydurucu ve ayırt ettirici ölçütlerin iyice araştırılması gereği vurgulanmıştır.

Schizoaffective psychoses are generally defined as a type of psychosis in which both affective and schizophrenic symptoms are pronounced. In this paper the definition and diagnostic criteria of schizoaffective psychoses within the framework of different classification systems and the relevant changes that have occurred in time have been reviewed. Genetic studies on schizoaffective psychoses suggest the presence of a strong genetic factor in the etiology of this disorder. Twin studies on schizoaffective psychoses have been reviewed and discussed with special reference to possible relations with subtypes of schizophrenic and/or affective disorders or intermediary forms. It is suggested that until more definite and specific genetic etiology is established there is a need for keeping the schizoaffective disorders as a clinical entity and for further studies to refine the defining criteria that will appear most meaningful with respect to genetics, prognosis and treatment.
