Bu gözden geçirme yazısında, şizofreninin karmaşıklığı ve yeni araştırma temalarından söz edildikten sonra, şizofreninin pozitif ve negatif belirtilerini değerlendirmek üzere geliştirilmiş olan Pozitif Belirtileri Değerlendirme Ölçeği (SAPS) ve Negatif Belirtileri Değerlendirme Ölçeği (SANS) üzerinde durulmuştur. Pozitif ve negatif şizofreni sendromlarına özgül olabilecek nörobiyolojik bulgular tartışılmış, pozitif-negatif şizofreni modelinin şizofreni gibi karmaşık bir bozukluğu açıklamak için yetersiz kaldığı, yeni modellere gerek olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.

This paper reviews the current issues of debate on the defining features, boundaries and subtypes of schizophrenia. The positive and negative symptoms theory is briefly described and the development and reliability studies of two scales used to assess positive and negative symptoms are presented. The studies designed to test this hypothesis by looking for a correlation of structral brain abnormalities and hypofrontality with negative symptoms are outlined. It is concluded that the model proposing two discrete syndromes is simplistic and more studies are needed to explain the interrelationship between positive and negative symptoms and their underlying neural mechanisms.
