Şizofrenide motor devinim bozuklukları genel kabulun tersine daha sık görülmektedir ve katatonik şizofreni ile sınırlı değildir. Bu bozukluklardan başlıcası istemli devinim bozukluğudur ve nöroleptik tedavi ile hafiflemektedir. Bu çalışmada sekizi ilaç kullanmayan 30 kronik şizofren ve 28 normal kontrol denek ele alınmış ve bu deneklerde kafa derisinden istemli devinim öncesi oluşan hazırlık potansiyeli (HP) kaydedilerek değerlendirilmiştir. HP, istemli devinimin hazırlanması, başlatılması ve planlanmasını yansıtmaktadır. Sonuçlar, şizofrenide hazırlık potansiyeli başlangıcının belirgin olarak geciktiği ve genliğinin düşük olduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca şizofrenik belirtiler ile hemisferik asimetri arasında bağlantı olduğu ve beyin hemisferlerinin nöroleptik ilaçlardan asimetrik olarak etkilendiği bulunmuştur.

Motor abnormalities intrinsic to schizophrenic disorder occur more frequently than is generally believed and are not limited to the catatonic schizophrenia. On of them is voluntary motor abnormalities and neuroleptics tend to reduce them. This study assessed scalp-recorded readiness potentials (RP) generated prior to voluntary movements, which comprise preparation, initiation and planning of voluntary movement, in chronic medicated (n= 22), and nonmedicated (n= 8) schizophrenics and age showed that the onset of the readiness potential was markedly delayed and the amplitude was reduced. We also found an association between hemispheric asymmetry and schizophrenic symptoms, and that cerebral hemispheres were influenced asymmetrically from neuroleptic drugs.
