Son yıllarda işkencenin etkileri üzerine yapılan çalışmalar işkencenin uzun dönemde ruhsal sorunlara yol açabildiğini göstermektedir. Türkiye’de yapılan kontrollu bir çalışmada, işkence görmüş 55 kişiden, 18’inde (%33) Travma Sonrası Stres Bozukluğu’nun gelişmiş olduğu saptandı. İşkenceye bağlı ruhsal sorunların etkili tedavisi için yeni çalışmalara gerek bulunmaktadır. Ruh sağlığı uzmanlarının işkencenin önlenmesi ve işkence görenlerin tedavisine yönelik insan hakları mücadelesine önemli katkıları olabilir.

Recent studies have shown that torture can have long-term psychological effects, independent of other stressful life events. A recent controlled study in Turkey found moderately severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms in 18 of 55(%33) survivors of torture some time ofter the torture experience. Further research is needed to explore the most effective ways of treating survivors of torture. Mental health professionals are in a unique position to contribute to human rights efforts concerning the prevention of torture and treatment of its effects.
