Namus, Türkiye’nin de içinde yer aldığı birçok kültürde kadın-erkek eşitsizliğini sürdüren bir anlayıştır. Kirlendiği düşünülen namusu temizleme adına namus kültürünü benimseyen ülkelerde her yıl binlerce kadın şiddete maruz kalmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, namus adına kadına yönelik şiddete dair sosyal temsilleri araştırmaktır. Bu amaç- la, iki aşamalı karma yöntemli bir araştırma yürütülmüştür. Araştırmanın niceliksel olan birinci kısmında, çoğulcu cehalet yazınından hareketle namus temelli cinayete ilişkin erkek katılımcıların betimsel norm algısı, kadın katılımcılarınsa buyruksal norm algısı araştırılmıştır. Niteliksel olan ikinci kısımda ise, namus cinayeti işleyeceği ve işlemeyeceği düşünülen kişilere ilişkin sosyal temsiller araştırılmıştır. Çalışmaya 56 kadın ve 40 erkek olmak üzere toplam 96 lisans öğrencisi katılmıştır. Katılımcıların yaş ortalaması 21.50 (S = 1.78) yıl olarak bulunmuştur. Niceliksel bulgular, hem kadın hem erkek katılımcılarda çoğulcu cehaletin varlığına işaret etmektedir. Namus adına kadına yönelik şiddete dair bireysel algı ile betimsel ve buyruksal norm algılarının farklılaştığı görülmüştür. Niteliksel bulgular ise, namus cinayeti işleyeceği ve işlemeyeceği düşünülen kişilere ilişkin temsillerin bireysel ve sosyal özellikler olarak iki ana başlıkta toplandığını göstermiştir. Bireysel özellikler, sosyal özelliklere göre daha fazla vurgulanmıştır. Katılımcıların, namus cinayeti işleyeceği düşünülen kişilere yönelik temsilleri daha çok olumsuz özellikleri içerse de, namus cinayetlerini meşrulaştıran özelliklerin de vurgulandığı gözlemlenmiştir

Honor leads to inequality between men and women in many cultures including Turkey. Every year, thousands of women are exposed to violence for the sake of cleaning so-called honor in countries where honor culture is sanctioned. The aim of this study was to explore social representations about honor-based violence against women. For this purpose, a two-step mixed methods study was carried out. Firstly, in the quantitative part of the study, pluralistic ignorance related to honor-based violence was investigated by addressing descriptive norm perceptions of male participants and injunctive norm perceptions of female participants. Secondly, in the qualitative part of the study, participants’ social representations about people considered to commit or not to commit honor-based femicide were explored. The sample consisted of 56 female and 40 male (N = 96) participants. The average age of the sample was 21.50 (SD = 1.78). The quantitative findings indicated that pluralistic ignorance was present for both male and female participants. It was found that individual perceptions about honor-based femicide differed from perceptions of descriptive and injunctive norms. The qualitative findings revealed that representations about people considered to commit or not to commit honor-based femicide were clustered into two main categories, namely, individual and social characteristics. Compared to social characteristics, individual ones were more frequently emphasized. Though participants’ representations mostly included negative features rather than positive ones, features that justify honor killings were also emphasized.
