İstismar ve ihmal yaşlıları fiziksel, ruhsal ve sosyal yönden yaralayan önlenebilir bir toplumsal sorundur. Psikiyatrik hastalıklar istismar ve ihmal açısından incinebilirliğin önemli bir nedenidir. Aynı zamanda bakım veren kişide psikiyatrik bozukluğun varlığında da yaşlıların istismara maruz kalma riski artmaktadır. Bu noktada hem bakım gereksinimi olan yaşlının hem de onun bakımından sorumlu bakım verenin sahip olduğu psikiyatrik bozukluğun tedavisi, yaşlı istismarının önlenmesinde ve kontrol altına alınmasında son derece önemlidir. Öte yandan psikiyatri hemşireleri açısından diğer önemli noktada, istismara maruz kalan yaşlıların ruh sağlığının risk altında olmasıdır. Bu yüzden sonradan ortaya çıkan psikiyatrik bozuklukların tedavisinde de istismarın tespiti ve kontrol altına alınmasında hemşireler en iyi pozisyonda olan profesyonellerdendir. The elder abuse and neglect along with an increase in elderly population is an increasingly important problem both in this world and in our country. Abuse and neglect is a social problem that can be prevented and that wounded physically, spiritually and socially to the elderly. Psychiatric disorders are a major cause of vulnerability in terms of abuse and neglect. At the same time in the presence of psychiatric disorders in people who caregiver, the risk of exposure to abuse of the elderly is increasing. At this point, both the elderly and the caregiver's own treatment of psychiatric disorders, in the prevention of elder abuse, and it is extremely important to be controlled. On the other hand, the other important point in terms of the psychiatric nurses is that the mental health of the elderly who victims of abuse is at risk. So, the nurses are professionals who are in the best position for detection of abuse and management in the treatment of subsequent psychiatric disorders. Health professionals have a very critical role in the notice, in the assessment and in the care of elder abuse. this review will create awareness for psychiatry nurses in the management and detection of cases.
